Dark emerald green bottle for mineral water with embossed lettering: "Gettysburg Katalysine Water." 10” tall; 4” in diameter at base. Very good overall condition with no cracks or chips, just a little unevenness to the lip that seems to be from the mold. Touted as relieving a vast array of ailments, “Gettysburg Katalysine Water” was advertised in the Brooklyn Eagle as early as 1868, though one might wonder if every bottle was filled here in town: the Gettysburg Spring Company was located at 63 Liberty Street in New York City.
In any case, the name did have brand recognition and proved a boon for the local economy as visitors came to town for a stay at the Gettysburg Springs Hotel from 1869 until about 1900. While we are fond of local Gettysburg water, we can make no claims ourselves about its curative properties then or now, whether from tap or bottle. In this case, “Katalysine” (from the Greek “kata” – down or below, and “Luo” – “to loosen”) perhaps hints at the major effect of the company’s water, purgative apparently, on the sufferer. We’ll stick to tap. [sr][PH:L]
