The CDV photograph features a young soldier standing next to a table. The young man appears to be wearing light blue trousers with a thin, dark stripe on the leg as well as a dark blue military vest. Over this he wears an apparent civilian four-button coat. Atop the table next to him sits an officer’s slouch hat with an acorn-tasseled hat cord and a Sixth Corps badge. The badge features a border much like the accompanying relic. The card is slightly trimmed at the top corners. There is an ornate back mark of “Jordan & Co. (late Bogardus) 229 Greenwich St. Established 1846.” There is some light tan staining on the upper left portion of the image.

The excavated Sixth Corps badge included here is the highlight!  This is a commercially-made pattern featuring a brass outer frame with a tin back and a t-bar hinged pin device. The appropriate color cloth designating a soldier’s division was to be placed between these two pieces.  On this particular specimen the brass has been engraved with a decorative pattern and gilted. Three of the four “arms” of the tin back are all that remain. The t-bar pin is complete, only the catch is missing. Most impressive is that there are still remains of the cloth that was inserted between the halves. All of the cloth remains except at the very center, where approximately a ½-inch portion is missing. This missing material at the center of the piece corresponds with some of the missing tin backing and has resulted in a visible hole through the center of the piece.  This item is truly a remarkable excavated relic!  [jet]
