US CIVIL WAR WALLET IDENTIFIED TO 16TH MASSACHUSETTS SOLDIER KILLED AT 2ND BULL RUN

$750.00 ON HOLD

Quantity Available: 1

Item Code: 1179-624

Wallet is made of brown leather and is of the usual tri-folding type with two bill sized interior pockets with leather divider and another of three pockets held closed by a leather flap. The wallet is held closed by a leather retaining strap that passes through two separate keepers on the outside.

Written in period ink on the inside of the wallet is “C. HOWARD, CO. E 16TH REGT. MASS. VOLS, 1ST BRIGADE 2ND DIVISION 3RD CORPS, WASHINGTON, D.C.” The Corps number is odd looking in that the point of the pen must have caught in the leather while writing and distorted the shape of the number.

Wallet is in excellent supple condition and is wonderfully identified.

Charles Howard was a 30 year old stonecutter living in Boston when he enlisted in Company E, 16th Massachusetts Infantry on July 12, 1861.

Records show that in April of 1862 he was absent and confined. He also had to forfeit $5 of his pay by order of a regimental court martial. He returned to duty in May.

Howard was listed as missing in action at 2nd Bull Run on August 29, 1862 but by December his listing was changed to killed in action. His location of burial is not known. [ad] [ph:L]
