Kit consists of a tin case that meas. approx. 4.50 x 2.00 x 1.00 inches with a removable tin lid. Also present are two small bottles for ink, a brush and a 3.25 x 1.50 inch stamped brass stencil that reads “PETER MURR” over “CO. A  99TH PA. INF.”

All pieces are in good condition and show only very minor wear from use.

Peter Murr was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania on March 6, 1843. His residence was listed as Philadelphia when he enlisted as a private in Company A, 99th Pennsylvania Infantry on July 26, 1861. He was wounded at Fredericksburg on December 13, 1862 and at Kelly’s Ford on November 7, 1863. He was mustered out at Washington, D.C. on July 1, 1865.

After the war Murr returned to Lancaster County where he married in 1894. The couple would have no children.

Murr worked as a wheelwright, tobacco farmer and in livery stables. He became a widower in 1904 and died of heart disease in the home of his sister on October 13, 1913 in Manheim, Pennsylvania. He is buried there in Zion Lutheran Cemetery.

The 99th Pennsylvania Infantry was organized on August 1, 1861 and served in the 3rd and 2nd Corps of the Army of the Potomac and was engaged at 2nd Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Kelly’s Ford, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor and Petersburg.  [ad][ph:L]
