CDV show Lanier posed with one hand resting on the base of column on which his slouch hat rests. He wears a medium-colored double breasted frock coat with very light-colored collar and cuffs. The rank of 1st lieutenant is visible on his collar. He also wears light-colored trousers with sash, sword belt and Model 1850 foot officers sword.

Contrast and clarity are very good. Paper and mount show only minor surface dirt. Bottom of the mount has a pencil ID of “LT. J.S. LANIER, C.S.A.”

Reverse has a photographer’s imprint for ANDERSON’S… NEW ORLEANS. There is also a modern pencil ID at top.

John Summerfield Lanier was born on February 10, 1839.

Lanier entered Confederate service as a 2nd lieutenant in Company K, 14th Mississippi Infantry. On July 12, 1861 he was ordered to report to General Leonidas Polk at Memphis, Tennessee where he joined Polk’s staff as acting assistant adjutant general. Lanier was present at Shiloh and Perryville.

By June of 1863 Lanier was a 1st lieutenant now serving on the staff of General Franklin Gardner and he was captured at Port Hudson on July 9, 1863 and confined at New Orleans, Louisiana, Fort Columbus, New York and then sent to Johnson’s Island, Ohio, Point Lookout, Maryland and finally Fort Delaware. He signed an oath of allegiance and was released on June 12, 1865.

After the war he resided in New Orleans where he was a registrar in the state land office. He died on July 16, 1900 and was buried in New Orleans Saint Louis Cemetery No. 1.     [AD] [PH:L]
