Image shows Dr. Joseph E. Janvrin. He wears a dark civilian suit with white shirt and a dark tie with printed decoration. Bottom of the mount has a printed caption with his title, name and Company.

Image has very good clarity and contrast. Mount has light edge wear but the paper is clean.

Reverse has a light pencil inscription of “DR. J. E. JANVRIN.”

Joseph Edward Janvrin was born January 13, 1839 in Exeter, New Hampshire. He attended Phillip’s Exeter Academy.

He enlisted as a private in Company K, 2nd New Hampshire Infantry on May 21, 1861 and was discharged for promotion on November 30, 1862.

On December 1, 1862 Janvrin was commissioned assistant surgeon of the 15th New Hampshire Infantry. He served with them until their muster out on August 13, 1863. While with the 15th Janvrin would have seen service at the siege of Port Hudson.

After the war Janvrin attended the College of Physicians and Surgeons from which he graduated in 1864. He was one of the founders of the International Congress of Gynecology and Obstetrics and had an office on Madison Ave in New York City. He married a woman from Easton, Pennsylvania in 1881 and the couple had two children.

Dr. Janvrin died in New York City on December 21, 1911 and is buried in Easton Cemetery in Easton, Pennsylvania.

The 2nd New Hampshire was a hard fought regiment seeing action at 1st Bull Run, Williamsburg, Oak Grove, Gaines’ Mill, White Oak Swamp, Malvern Hill, 2nd Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg where the 2nd bore the brunt of the assault on the Peach Orchard. After Gettysburg the 2nd garrisoned Point Lookout for a time before returning to the army to fight at Drewry’s Bluff, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. [ad] [ph:M]
