Charles Freeman Holt was born in Antrim, New Hampshire on July 27, 1841. He enlisted as a Private in Company G, on June 5, 1861.

During the fighting at Williamsburg Captain Leonard Drown of the 2nd New Hampshire led a small group of men towards a body of Confederates calling on them to surrender. The Confederates raised a white flag but some of their men fired into the Federals. A bullet passed through the neck of Captain Drown killing him instantly and then passing into the arm of Private Holt.

Holt returned to his Company in time to fight at 2nd Bull Run on August 29, 1862. During the action Holt was shot in the face losing a portion of his upper jaw and six teeth. He was discharged due to wounds on October 31, 1862.

Charles Holt died in Antrim, New Hampshire on July 17, 1907 and is buried there in Maplewood Cemetery.

The 2nd was a hard fought regiment seeing action at 1st Bull Run, Williamsburg, Oak Grove, Gaines’ Mill, White Oak Swamp, Malvern Hill, 2nd Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg where the 2nd bore the brunt of the assault on the Peach Orchard.
