Three quarter standing CDV view of Assistant Surgeon Albert Potter of the 5th Rhode Island Heavy Artillery. Potter stands in front of a painted backdrop of a river valley with one arm behind his back and the other tucked in the front of his coat Napoleonic style. He wears a double-breasted frock coat with no insignia. Image and mount are very clean. Reverse has orange tax stamp and some collector information. ID confirmed by on-line database image.

Albert Potter, who is a direct descendant of Roger Williams, the founder of Rhode Island, was made Assistant Surgeon of the 5th R.I. Heavy Artillery on October 10, 1861. On July 15, 1863 he was detached as Surgeon in charge of Foster General Hospital in New Berne, N.C. He was promoted to full Surgeon on November 11, 1863. Potter was mustered out on December 22, 1864. After the war he lived in Chepachet, R.I and died there on October 2, 1902.
