Greenwood enlisted on April 30, 1864 as a Private in the 22nd Louisiana Infantry. By the unit's September-October report he was listed as "absent - sick". On March 28, 1865 he enlisted in the 5th Company of the Washington Artillery of New Orleans. Surrendered to General Canby on May 4, 1865.

The 22nd Consolidated Louisiana Infantry was organized by the consolidation of those members of the 3rd, 17th, 21st (Smith's-Higgins'-Patton's), 22nd (Theard's-Herrick's), 26th, 27th, 29th, and 31st Infantry Regiments east of the Mississippi River at Enterprise, Mississippi on January 26, 1864.  It served as heavy artillery during most of its service.
