CDV is tentatively identified on the reverse as William Gale of Ohio. Identification is written in modern pencil so how accurate it may be is anyone’s guess.
The subject is posed holding a pocket revolver across his chest. He wears a dark forage cap, a dark civilian jacket open to reveal a white shirt. The jacket is tucked into a pair of light-colored trousers with a waist belt that holds a holster at front.
Contrast and clarity are very good. Mount has clipped bottom corners and light surface dirt. Paper is very good.
Reverse is blank but for the above mentioned ID that simply reads “WILLIAM GALE OHIO” along with some collector information.
There is only one William Gale from Ohio listed in the records. His full name was William H. Gale and he enlisted at age 21 as a corporal in Company A, 76th Ohio Infantry on October 5, 1861. He was commissioned a 1st lieutenant in Company C on January 18, 1865 and was mustered out at Louisville, Kentucky on July 15, 1865.
The 76th Ohio was part of the 15th Corps of the Army of the Tennessee and saw action throughout the war in the west from Fort Donelson to Bentonville. [ad][ph:L]
