CDV is of a tall, lean, somber looking young fellow standing with one arm resting on the back of a chair. He wears a light-colored shell jacket and matching trousers and on his head, at a rakish angle, is a dark slouch hat with a light-colored band around the base of the crown.

The shell jacket is of the usual Confederate pattern but it is almost devoid of buttons. Only two can be made out, one near the top and one at the bottom of the jacket. Both look to be of dark bone, or wood. The jacket is worn open and kind of sags on the subject’s boney frame. A close look will reveal the cut of the collar proving it is a shell jacket and not just a sagging coat. An examination of subject’s trousers will reveal “mule-ear” pockets.

Contrast and clarity are excellent as are the paper and mount.

Reverse has a photographer’s imprint for LUMPKIN & TOMLINSON… RICHMOND, VA. There is also a canceled 3 cent tax stamp at bottom along with some collector information in pencil.

Image is from the collection of the late William A. Turner. [AD][PH:L]
