1/4 PLATE AMBROTYPE ARMED BRITISH, CANADIAN OR MILITIA SOLDIER

$100.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1219-47

This quarter plate size ambrotype shows a dapper looking soldier, full length, standing at ease with his P1853 Enfield rifle musket with its sling in place and bayonet fixed. He wears a short tunic, coming to about mid-thigh, with cording across the chest, a wide cartridge box sling, and wears a busby with chinstrap coming down just under his lower lip and partially hidden by a wide mustache. The photographer has tinted his gloves and the top of his shirt collar white, and his jacket cuffs, collar and plume on the side of his busby red. The busby reminds us of British artillery, though the rifle musket points to infantry, and the dark cartridge box sling might even suggest light infantry. We will pass along any further information we get on the unform and likely identification of the unit to the buyer.

The image has an oval gilt brass mat, is uncased, and has an unfortunate crack cutting across the figure about mid-thigh and then branching on the right of the plate. The photographer used a plain backdrop with the floor visible at the lower edge. There are few small spots to the emulsion on the left, not affecting the image.  [sr][ph:L]
