This relic 3 inch Hotchkiss canister round is almost complete. Both the top plate and the lead sabot are present. The bottom of the lead sabot still has the raised lettering that reads “HOTCHKISS 3 IN. JAN’Y 7. 1862 PATENT.” One side of the tinned sheet-iron body is missing a 3.25 inch section near the top exposing the interior and causing the case shot to come loose. The round has been stabilized by cutting a bed of foam in a wood display box and laying the round within the cut-out and then replacing the case shot. This works very well and also makes a great display.
Canister rounds are rare in any condition and this one makes a great display to show what was inside these deadly projectiles.
