This US cavalry overcoat cape rates poor to fair for condition as is, but could be improved with a little TLC  and look good in for use in an Indian Wars cavalry display. The detachable cape with a branch of service colored lining was adopted with the Model 1884 overcoat,  continued in use with the Model 1885, and in fact codified some alterations made by soldiers for some years. On the exterior the capes used the darker Saxony blue adopted by the army as a more uniform and lasting color, and fastened down the front with seven small general service eagle buttons, and carried seven small wire loops sewn into the upper edge to engage wire hooks concealed by the foldover collar of the overcoat.

This one was definitely issued, carrying two initials and a last name in old brown ink on the inside of the neck about 5 inches from the left edge. We cannot decipher it, but it might yield identification to patience and better lighting. The cape shows some dirt and soiling, but has good color, but could benefit from a needle and thread. The collar edge is somewhat frayed, with seam holding the inner and outer layers intact, but with some raggedness on the fold. There are just two wire loops still in place, and much of the fraying seems to be from these pulling out. The center seam on the exterior back is also open for about 8 inches down from upper edge, and this has produced about a 5-inch tear in the yellow lining. There are some small moth nips inside on the (wearer’s) lower right and center right, with four or five larger holes, the biggest ¾-inch, just right of center near the bottom edge, but only one shows on the outside, about ½ by ¼ inch. Two of the small Indian War type general service eagle buttons remain in place, showing age toning. The upper three buttonholes show some wear. The others are good. This needs some TLC, but could be improved without a lot of trouble and be a colorful addition to a display.  [sr][ph:L]
