Black memorandum ribbon; has separated from the brass hanger pin from which it was once suspended.  Ribbon is in remembrance of Charles C. Dwight, New York Post no. 109’s namesake.

Hanger is made of brass and has a dark patina from age.  The original pin is in good condition and still intact.  The ribbon only holds onto the hanger by a thick thread.  There is a an embossed image of a GAR membership pin the center, encircled by the lettering “IN MEMORIAM” across the top, and “DWIGHT/POST, NO. 109/ DEP’T NEW  YORK,/ GAR” in embossed silver along the bottom.  Item measures 6 7/8” long and 2 3/8” wide.

Col Chas C Dwight was born in Richmond MASS 1830; graduated Williams College 1850; elected Wayne County judge 1860. Enlisted on 9/17/61 at Auburn, NY and commissioned Captain Company D 75th NYV. Discharged for promotion on 7/10/62, as Capt. & Asst. Adj. General, US Vols Adjutant Genl Dept. Appointed Colonel 160th 9-6-1862, mustered November 1862. Commissioner of Prisoner Exchange for the Dept of the Gulf during 1864; discharged 5-25-1865.  Replaced Henry Wells on Supreme Court during 1868; "Judge Dwight acknowledged the compliment (of being made post namesake) by a handsome donation, and by many subsequent courtesies to the Post and to its members"; died 1902.   [mc/ld] [ph:L]
