This was the first award made by Germany to its WW1 veterans and the cross on this one has swords between its arms, indicating it was awarded to a frontline veteran. The award also appears in different form for non-combat veterans and widows and parents of fallen soldiers in WW1. Known in Germany as Das Ehrenkreuz des Weltkrieges 1914/1918 (The Honor Cross of the World War,) it was introduced by Hindenburg in 1934 and is sometimes known as the Hindenburg Cross among collectors. It is plain on the reverse. The obverse shows an olive wreath surrounding the dates 1914/1918 and is patterned after the 1870/71 Franco-Prussian War commemorative metal. This is in good condition, with strong color to the ribbon, and even bronze tone to the planchet. [sr] [ph:L]
