This snake plate buckle belonged to collector/writer Dr. Francis Lord, who authored Civil War Collector's Encyclopedia as well as numerous other Civil War history related books. Lord's collection key indicates that this buckle was recovered at Camden, Arkansas. The belt buckle measures 3.5 inches by 2.5 inches. The snake piece measures 1.5 inches long. The piece is in excellent condition with only mild verdigris on the one loop. The snake buckle design became popular during the mid-19th century and continued through the post war period making it difficult to identify when this item would have seen use. This item includes a small letter of authenticity from Bedford C. Hayes of Gunsight Antiques.
