In 1859 the US Marine Corps regulations changed. The prized Mamaluke style sword was replaced with the same regulation sword used by the Army. This would later be reversed and today the Marines still carry the Mamaluke sword. It is exceedingly rare to find a Marine marked example of this regulation sword. The sword is a typical style with high grade engraving finish and heavy gilt. The blade etch is typical pattern for this sword. The brass scabbard is engraved with foliate and geometric designs along with an eagle clutching 4 arrows and an olive branch. The reverse side of the scabbard has “USM” scratched in simple letters; in our opinion this was done when the sword was carried. Overall condition is superb. Sword is from one of the premier sword collections ever assembled – the Kevin Hoffman Collection.  [ss]
