CONFEDERATE D-GUARD BOWIE KNIFE

Item Code: 1043-19

A classic early war Confederate sidearm. About 20 inches overall with a 14 ½ inch blade, this knife uses a simple cylindrical turned wood grip without ferrules and very plain iron guard that descends from a rounded pommel cap into a gently curved knucklebow, widens slightly to form a minimal guard, and then narrows again to extend out into a slightly flattened and forward curving quillon. The blade is flat and single-edged. It is made without a ricasso, but with a slightly rounded choil as the blade exits the guard. The iron guard shows just minor pitting, as does the blade. The blade edge shows some small nicks for the first three inches from the tip, then a few more starting at the six-inch point. The only significant damage are two fingernail size bits at the eight-inch mark. The grip is original and is slightly loose from shrinkage, but has just normal age stains a few separation lines.

Intended to impress the enemy with the bearer’s willingness to bring the fight to close quarters, these knives are quintessentially Confederate and form a collecting field of their own. They show up in many early war Confederate photographs and are excavated from campsites and battlefields as well.   [sr]
