This flag came out of Missouri some fifty-plus years ago and shows age appropriate to the era of Confederate veterans organizations and reunions in the first half of the century. Made of silk, it measures 52 inches by 36.5 inches, and has been pressure-mounted in a frame for display measuring 61 inches by 45 inches overall. It still retains vivid colors, the blue stripe descending from left to right, shifting to a just barely lighter blue than the other. All the stars are intact. There are some tears to the upper left of the canton, and small tears along the upper blue stripe to the right and one hole.
There are also small losses along the upper edge and somewhat more along the lower edge. A narrow water stain runs along the top edge of the white ground. The lower edge shows some chipping and one narrow vertical tear just a couple of inches long. Some small fragments of silk have settled in the lower part of the frame, but the flag is significantly intact and seems stable.
There is no need to review the history of the Confederate national colors. One significant element of this flag worth mentioning is that it is real. Most that come on the market billed as Confederate veterans’ flags are considerably more recent than the last surviving veteran. [sr]
