This sword is classified as non-regulation as it has the full basket minus the “US”.  High grade example with brass guard and silver-plated grip with central wire with two flanking wires. Blade is still bright with some staining.  Obverse etch is foliate - stand of arms / EPU ribbon / stand of arms / foliate.  Reverse is cross hatching / stand of arms / foliate - US - foliate / stand of arms - foliate.  Leather scabbard is crazing.  Brass mounts and drag are hand chased on both sides.  Top mount presentation reads: “Presented to / Capt E. A. Wood / By the / Worchester City Guards /  Co. A. 51st Reg. Mass. V. / Oct. 9th 1862. “

Edwin Augustus Wood, born in 1826 in Westminster, Worcester County, MA, was a 36 year old bookkeeper residing in Worcester when he enlisted as a Captain on 8/7/62. On 9/25/62 he was commissioned into Co. A, 51st Mass. Infantry. He mustered out on 7/27/63 at Worcester. Following the war he was a member of GAR Post #10 (George H. Ward) in Worcester. He died on 8/30/1910 and is buried in Worcester Rural Cemetery in Worcester.
