This Civil War period Artillery crate served its original purpose during that war, only to be put back into service later in the 19th century as a shipping crate for SPARE PARTS FOR SCOFIELD, SMITH & WESSON REVOLVERS CAL. 45. SERV. This stencil is shown on both of the length sides of the crate where the original “Forest Green” military paint had once been, then removed and taken down to the bare wood surface and then re-stenciled as above. When this crate had been put back into service, most if not all of the previous markings had been obliterated by being scraped away. There are scant remains of the original Civil War period stenciling located on both of the side boards under the handle-cleats noting the packaging of the 3 “ Hotchkiss shells. Also located around the top edges of this crate are tack- type nails that look to have held down a paper or cardboard lid at one point. The original period wooden lid is missing. Over all measurements of the crate are 20 ¾ “in length by 14 ¾” in width and 11” in height. A nice example of the continuous military usage of Civil War ammunition crate over the years.
