This rammer is from the Rock Island Arsenal and is so marked on the handle with “R. I. A.” and an inventory number that looks to be “1008” or it could be “1908” which could also be the year of a subsequent arsenal wide inventory and inspection. The very good condition of the item shows it was in the arsenal for some time and is no doubt Civil War surplus.
Rammer is full-length and meas. approx. 7 feet long. It has a full sponge head covered in a carpet like multi-colored material. Head meas. approx. 8.00 inches long by 14.00 inches in circumference. Head is clean and shows little wear.
Opposite end has rammer head made of wood with and iron band around the base and the face edge. Center of face is hollowed out. Wood is in excellent condition.
The entire shaft and rammer head are painted a dark O.D. green. Some of the paint has worn off in spots but 95% of it remains.
Great item for any artillery collection.
NOTE: Requires special shipping arrangements, can be picked up here at the shop, or we can deliver at any of the militaria shows that we attend.
