This is a very good condition black leather artillery pass box complete with its fixed carrying strap and sliding cover. This measures 11 5/8 inches tall, closed, and has a 5-inch interior diameter. It is fitted with a 1-inch wide leather carrying strap about 54 inches long secured to each side by two rivets. The lid has a handle on top and loops on either side permitting it to slide up and down the strap. The finish shows crazing and losses, but the leather is solid and the white paint stencil clearly reads “12 PDR / LIGHT.” There are no maker marks. The sling is solid. The stitching is tight throughout. Like the gunner’s haversack, the pass box was used to carry a round to a gun for loading, but tended to be used in carrying ammunition from magazines rather than caissons and also frequently shows up in period photographs of Navy gun crews drilling with 12-pound light howitzers for landing operations. This is a great example that displays very well. [sr][ph:L]
