Produced by the Federal Ordnance Department, this artillery round is referred to as a Civil War twelve-pound canister. In rebuilt condition and made up of all original components, this cylindrical, heavy artillery smoothbore round is filled with twenty-seven 1½” diameter iron balls arranged in four horizontal layers of six balls with three balls vertically at the center. All components are heavily rust pock-marked and coated with a dark protective sealant and glued together. The thin tin sheet that once covered the round is missing, as expected.

Most often fired from the bronze Napoleon 12-pounder smoothbore heavy cannon, the canister round was broken by the gun’s discharge and the projectiles spread out into a cone pattern that was very effective against enemy infantry. Total length of the canister round measures 5.6” high with a 4.5” diameter. The iron top plate called the ‘culot’ appears molded or crimped from the force of the charge when it left the tube. Base plate is flat. Usually sawdust was packed in the tin to fill the voids among the iron balls. This re-assembled Civil War, heavy artillery, 12-pound canister is in strong, tight condition.
