By Henry A. Wise. Published by J.B. Lippincott, Philadelphia, PA: 1872. Front eps, owner stamp: “R.A. Weaver”. 320 pp. In burgundy, blind-stamped glazed cloth, 8.5 x 5.75”, w/gilt spine lettering. Exhibits light wear at the extremities, w/chipped head of spine. Else VG and handsome. Virginian Henry Wise had a varied political career, serving as a congressman and US minister to Brazil during the Tyler administration, as a Governor of VA, 1856-60. One of his last official acts was signing John Brown’s death warrant. After serving during the war in various Confederate commands as Brigadier general, he returned to practicing law, and by the 1870s had become a Republican and a supporter of US Grant. Prominent Civil War-era Virginian, interesting memoir.  [JP]
