Aqua glass cylinder shaped bottle shows a rolled lip and pontil scar. Embossing reads, "DR. THOMPSON'S EYE WATER / NEW LONDON CONNT".
Bottle measures 4" tall by 1" in diameter. No chips or cracks.
Isaac Thompson was a fairly well known pharmacist who sold various patent medicines. He introduced this remedy in 1795 and it was continuously available for nearly 200 years. It had the largest sales of any ophthalmic preparation in the 19th century. Although the product implies he was a doctor, he was only a druggist with no formal training. The active ingredients in his "Celebrated Eye Water" were opium, alcohol and zinc sulphate. It was told it could help any eye problem except for cataracts or incurable blindness. [sl]
