An interesting piece of antique pest control, looking somewhat like a period decanter. Made of glass with three small feet so that it could stand upright on a table with the bottom opening accessible from underneath, or be hung by a cord tied below the flange on its neck. The idea was to fill the inner perimeter tray with something sweet to attract the insects, and cap the top with a stopper, now missing. The intended victims would then fly up and inside the bottle but not fly back down and drown or die inside the confines of the bottle. Excellent condition.
These are assigned various dates from the Colonial to the Victorian period. Whatever the date they are a clever device, essential in your kitchen or parlor, and likely to provide an evening’s entertainment in lieu of cable or the internet. [SR][PH:L]
