BANK OF COLUMBUS, GEORGIA 50₵ NOTE DATED 1862 PRINTED ON BACK OF OLD NOTE

$35.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 2020-634

Fifty cent note from the Bank of Columbus, dated January 1862.  Serial number 7009 in ink. Signature in ink. Series “A”. No pin holes.

Paper was such a scarce commodity during the war that unused, previously printed items were often reused by printing on the blank reverse. The sheet was usually turned 90-degrees so only a portion of the first print is visible on the reused sheet.

Reverse shows a wonderful example of this with portions of a City of Columbus 25₵ and 50₵  bill displayed.

Very interesting Southern note illustrating the resourcefulness of folks facing a shortage of paper during the Civil War.  [jet]
