Colorful patriotic letter envelope from the Civil War. Unused. Measures 3” x 5 ½”. Colorful image on left edge of an American flag with the statement “Stand by the Flag” below. Nice bright color.
The American Civil War precipitated one of the largest expansions in the U.S. postal service. Between the commerce generated by the war and the correspondence between soldiers and their families, the use of the postal system boomed. One of the curious effects of its increased popularity was the production of these patriotic envelopes, a daily reminder of the division from which the country suffered. [jet]
