This original bill of sale reads, “RED’D WED APR 19 1842 FROM JAMES SPEARS JR ESQ TWO HUNDRED & FIFTY DOLLARS FOR A NEGRO BOY NAMED ANTHONY, ABOUT SEVEN YEARS OF AGE, WHICH BOY I WARRANT AND DEFENDE TO THE SAID JAMES SPEARS JR HIS HEIRS ADMINISTRATORS AND ASSIGNS, AGAINST MYSELF MY HEIRS ADMINISTRATORS OR ASSIGNS OR ANY OTHER PERSON LAWFULLY CLAIMING OR TO CLAIM THE SAME. GIVEN UNDER MY HAND AND SEAL THIS 19TH APR 1842, WITNESS D.G. LIVINGSTON JOHN ROGERS S”. Paper has yellowed with age and is totally clear and legible. Shows two ink smudges on left side.
Bill of sale measures 5” x 7 ½”, is matted and housed in gold frame. Frame measures approx. 13 ½” x 15 ¾”. Frame is in very good condition with some small scattered nicks. Reverse has wire for hanging purposes. [sm]
