Union Hymn, written by Jon E. Kiser of South Troy, VT. Measures 5 7/8" by 7 3/4"; fold line at center, light scattered soiling. On the reverse in period ink is written, "to Mrs. Emily J. Strait / by Alanson Wiles / Co. A. Buck-tail regiment P.R.V.C". Covered with translucent, acid-free paper on both sides.
Alanson Wiles (listed as Allison and Alonson Wiles) was a resident of Tioga, PA when he enlisted as a Private on 6/11/1861. On that date he mustered into Co. A, 42nd PA Infantry. Mustered out on 6/11/64 at Harrisburg, PA. Wiles re-enlisted on 9/13/1864 as a Private; on that date he mustered into Co. D, 17th Pennsylvania Cavalry. Listed as a POW on 9/29/64 at Fisher's Hill, VA. Listed as absent (date not stated), and absent at muster out.
