Black and white litho, 8 x 11.25”, w/beige matte, trimmed in gold and blue, in white wooden frame, 12.75 x 16.75”, w/ card backing and hang-wire. Exhibit light yellowing of inner matte and moderate chipping of frame edges on all sides. Else VG and handsome.
A Naval academy graduate—class of 1864—Gillis served with the Union blockading fleet, and subsequently commanded the Michigan, Franklin, the flagship of the European Squadron, Lackawanna, Minnesota, and Hartford, the flagship of the Pacific Squadron. Serving on the frigate USS St. Lawrence, he participated in the defeat of the rebel privateer Petrel on July 28, 1861 off South Carolina. Following the war he was promoted to Captain in 1876 and Commodore in January 1887. He commanded the South Atlantic Squadron from 1888 to 1890, holding the rank of acting rear admiral.
