Presented here is a highly detailed pencil sketch by an unknown artist who has captured a typical Civil War outdoors camp scene. The very attractive work, completed entirely in pencil on thin white card or light colored pasteboard, measures 7 5/8" wide x 6" high. Image is framed and matted in a glassed-in, modern wood frame. The sketch highlights an unknown winter camp in late spring and features some fifteen soldiers at ease in front of and in close proximity to their log huts. Four such 'log huts' are centered horizontally in the image and each hut is constructed into a square with five cut logs to each side. Each hut is covered with a tent of white duck material that serves as a roof and the end flaps are open on two of the huts. In the background are large evergreen trees with a number of large deciduous type trees without their leaves. Milling about in front of the tent area are fifteen Union soldiers, all in uniform with a few just in shirtsleeves. They include four bandsmen with large horn instruments and two Zouaves with 'fezzes' atop their heads.

Other soldiers include one holding and reading a newspaper, one sitting perched atop the top log of a hut, one sitting on the edge of a large bass drum, and another soldier lounging by the hut smoking a long pipe. Other men sit by the open fire, one carries wood, one is shaving a log for kindling and one appears to be practicing his horn instrument. The sky appears gray with scattered clouds about. Sketch specimen is attached to a mat board and appears in very good condition with just very, very minor wear at the bottom right hand corner of the paper. Does not detract at all from the image. The ready-to-hang frame has a paper backside that has been professionally sealed. A wonderful, contemporary sketch of a Civil War winter quarters scene rich in detail.
