This cartoon, The Life of Jeff Davis Illustrated, features 6 panel cartoons. Philadelphia, PA. Six printed pages on one folded sheet measuring 4 1/8" by 17 3/8" with woodblock illustrations of Jefferson Davis from 1860-1865.


The 6 panel cartoon recounts the war while poking fun at the president of the Confederacy. 
The first image features a bulldog with a neck collar that reads “SCOTT” telling a dachshund wearing a Confederate flag and a collar that reads “JEFF” to take a rib rack that reads “WASHINGTON.” The caption reads “HIS MILITARY POSITION IN 1860 / THE POLITE INVITATION.”

The second panel reads “1861-2” at the top with a n image of soldiers loading a cannon. It reads “JEFF’S PLATFORM / NO COMPRMISE WITH MUDSILLS! / COTTON IS KING.”
The third panel reads “1863. ONE OF THE CHIVALRY F.F.V.” with a depiction of a night on a donkey. The caption reads “On his way to Washington, with Special Orders from JEFF to TAKE it.”

The fourth panel “1864. TIMES HAVE CHANGED” includes a chicken with the tile "The Spirit of the Retreating Army" and a haggard image of Jefferson Davis titled "Jeff's Appearance at this Time". It reads “Jeff and his Crew are permitted (of stern necessity,) to confine themselves to Richmond and Suburbs.” and “They resolve on a CHANGE of BASE.”


The fifth panel features images for the 1865 showing Davis running away in a woman's clothing with the caption "His Last Resort--A change of uniform is necessary. He now believes in Woman's Rights, and avails himself of the advantages" and “HIS PRESENT APPEARANCE AS A BLOOMER / His wife warns the Boys not to irritate him, or he might hurt them.”


The sixth and final image reads “THE END OF THE CONFEDERACY” with an image of a man entering a railroad tunnel and with C.S.A. written on the rear with a cutoff caption that reads “FINIS.”


This curious cartoon is taped to off-white matting that measures approximately 21 inches long and 7 inches wide. The cartoon itself measures 17 inches by 4 inches. There are visible fold creases in the center of the cartoon but it otherwise is in clean condition. The bottom text is cut off short but covered by the matting.
