Double-sided playbill, measuring 18 x 6”, yellowed & chipped along top & bottom margins. Horizontal fold marks with a one inch tear along one margin.

Colorfully written period text:  “COMING! The Barnum of Them All / Sterlings largest and Best Uncle Tom’s Cabin/ In a Large Waterproof Tent.…..The Play is Given In Its Original Entirety…….Two Funny Topsies….Legree and his Slaves….An Awe-inspiring and Bewitching Transformation Scene…A Pack of Siberian Bloodhounds…..BE SURE TO BRING THE CHILDREN TO SEE EVA AND HER SHETLAND PONIES…..Don’t Fail to Hear the Electric Caliope. The Latest And Greatest Musical Invention…”

Obviously, some sixty five years after its appearance as a novel, Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin still had Circus showbiz appeal. Only forty five years earlier, Abraham Lincoln had facetiously remarked, on being introduced to Alcott, “So you’re the little lady who brought on this big war.”

A striking piece of cultural Americana. Excellent collectible.
