This original regimental document, referred to as a military “Soldier’s Memorial,” was privately printed during the war for members of Company G, 133rd Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry as a remembrance of their service in the field. Paper document measures approximately 20½” long x 16” wide and is framed in a period, dark wood frame.
The memorial, which is a 1862 lithograph engraving, published by the Currier & Ives Company, was typical of those printed during the war. Profusely decorated with engravings of military motifs, the print is labeled “SOLDIER’S MEMORIAL” in ½” letters at the top area of the image with a large (13” wide x 6” high) colorful scene of soldiers and a patriotic vignette of George Washington. Directly below the image are three, crescent-domed tablets, 10” long x 3” wide that depict the names of the company officers and men in the unit. Beneath the tablets is another set of three smaller frames that note the regiment’s engagements, and mustering in and out of service at Harrisburg, PA.
The document itself is in fair to good overall condition, but suffers from some surface grime; foxing along all the edges; one 1” long tear at top left corner, and a large water stain 8” x 8” at the lower left side. This Memorial has been highlighted with red, blue and some yellow tinting in the upper areas of the lithograph. Print has a piece of old veneer wood board backing as part of the wooden frame. Wood frame is in fair condition. Glass is original and in good, un-cracked condition. Memorial would make a nice tribute to any Pennsylvania military display or collection.
