Text: “Private Julius F. Phelps: Co. E,5 Iowa Vols. is discharged from this hospital& has orders to report to his regiment for duty. / Edw. F. Strode / Asst. Surg. USA /In charge of Webster Hospitals.”
Born in Vermont, Julius F. Phelps was 28 when he enlisted and mustered in as a private in Co. “E”, 5th Iowa Vols. He was wounded at Iuka, MS, 9/19/1862, and at Champion Hill, MS, 5/16/1863 (severely in the arm). He transferred into Co. “G”, 5th Iowa Cavalry, 8/8/1864, and was killed in action while on picket duty on the Duck River at Maury’s Mills, TN, 11/28/1864.
