Addressed to “Genl S. Oakley Vanderpool/ Surgeon General S.N.Y.” Text: “Genl: Yours of the 21^st inst. is received. You will confer a very great favor by appointing Doctor G.H. Leach as Surgeon & Dr. Robert V. McKim Surgeon & Dr. Robert V. McKim as Assistant. If there should be any insuperable objection to either (which I scarcely think possible) please notify, that I may make a new nomination, as I prefer a friend to a stranger./ Very Respy yours/ S.K. Second page endorsement: “”New York Oct. 23 1861/ Col. S. K. Zooks 57^th Reg./ Request abbt. Of Dr. G.H. Leach as Surg. And R. V. McKim as assistant/ 57^th Regt.”

Samuel Kosciuszko Zook recruited the 57^th New York Volunteers and later advanced to brigade command at Fredericksburg, where he lost 527 men in defense of the “Sunken Road” at Marye’s Heights. Wounded in this encounter he was commended by Gen. W.S. Hancock, and promoted to brigadier general, serving with his brigade at Chancellorsville and again at Gettysburg, where he was mortally wounded in the Wheatfield on July 2, 1863, while coming to the support of the battered Third and Fifth Corps. His wheat field monument can be observed from the Millerstown.
