This is a letter that went to one of the most important men in the Confederacy. 3 pp. in ink; excellent condition, all legible. Fold lines.

Dated May 18, 1874, Savannah, GA. Written by former Confederate surgeon John M. Johns to former Confederate Surgeon General Samuel Preston Moore. He states that he has learned that medical officers “…of the late Confederate States to meet in Atlanta” later that month and that “…no doubt but you will be chosen chairman…we have formed in this city an Association of medical officers of the army and navy of the late Confederate States and  have in our archives some interesting collections with a number more promised. A great misfortune so many of us lost at the surrender all of our records…which would now be so valuable to us…one of the results of the “Lost Cause”. In case you organize an Ass’n we will heartily unite with you…it should be formed immediately and arrest from oblivion the deeds and records of ‘those who lost all…honor’. Future historians will point out the deeds of valor and heroism of the mighty men of battle, but it is only through such an organization…that the self-sacrifice of the medical officers acting without the excitement of the contending armies, fighting against that unseen but certain enemy, death, striving to cheat him of the victims he has chosen…[it is the only way the deeds] can be preserved for posterity.”

This is a fantastic and well written letter about one of the most important areas of the Civil War, the medical service.   [ld]
