Four lines-"Appvd & respy/ forwarded/ L.Polk/ Lt. This signature was from a document signed February 6, 1863." Cut signature double matted in black and butternut, the remainder in butternut. Mounted in fine contemporary gilt trimmed frame, w/paper backing & hangwire. Signature ink slightly faded, w/light foxing to paper. Matte and frame in excellent condition.

A West Point graduate and close friend of Jefferson Davis in his youth , Leonidas Polk resigned his army commission to enter the Episcopal ministry. During the war he entered the Confederate Army as a provisional Major General and served in a variety of capacities the Army of Tennessee. He clashed vehemently with army commander Braxton Bragg and was nearly court-martialed as a result. During mid-June 1864 he was killed at Pine Mountain, Ga. by Gen. Sherman's union artillery. Highly attractive piece.
