“Abstract of Articles received from Officers in the Field during the month of June 1864…”

Gives date and from whom articles were received. Listed are Horses, Halters and Grain sacks.

The battery was commanded at the Battle of Gettysburg by Captain Ricketts. It brought 144 men to the field serving six Ordnance Rifles, and suffered 6 killed, 14 wounded and 3 missing. The battery was assigned to the Third Volunteer Brigade of the Artillery Reserve.

On July 2nd the Battery reached the field and took position on East Cemetery Hill in the afternoon and engaged the Rebel batteries on Benner’s Hill.  At 8 p.m. a Rebel column charged the Battery.  The Union Infantry of the XI Corps that was detailed to support the battery fled in dismay, leaving Ricketts’ Battery alone to face the fury of the attackers, and a desperate hand-to-hand conflict ensued which was repulsed after every round of canister had been fired. A substantial number of the enemy had managed to overrun the battery in an attempt to spike Ricketts’guns. His men replied with a furious counterattack, using handspikes, gun-swabs, stones, and fists. On July 3rd, the battery was engaged with the Rebel batteries on the left and centre of the line.

Ricketts signs as Captain.  Folds and small stain on upper right corner. Mounting stain along left edge.
