Signature in ink reads, “OCTO. 20/51, S.H. STRINGHAM, CAPTAIN, U.S.N.”. Entirely legible, on clipped paper that measures 3 5/8” x ¾”. Paper has brown spotting at top left. Signature remains dark, with no fading.

Rear Admiral Silas Horton Stringham (November 7, 1798 – February 7, 1876) was an officer of the United States Navy who saw active service during the War of 1812, the Second Barbary War, and the Mexican–American War, and who commanded the Atlantic Blockading Squadron at the beginning of the American Civil War. Two Navy ships have been named USS Stringham in his honor.  [SM]
