Dated “Oct. 19th, 1864.” In ink, on white paper w/black border margins, left and wright, measuring 3 x 5”. Exhibits one light but small and minor smudge, else clean and entirely legible. VG overall. Full 4-line inscription:
“Very respectfully/ yr. friend & Servt./ Franklin Pierce/ Oct. 19th, 1864.”
A New Hampshire native, born 11/23/1804, Pierce served as U.S. Senator and attained Brigadier rank during Mexican War, before being elected to the presidency (1853-1857). Pro-southern in sympathies, a vocal critic of Lincoln, he died 10/8/1869. Solid U.S. President collectible. In protective sleeve. [jp]
