SIGNED AND FRAMED GENERAL DOUGLAS McARTHUR PHOTOGRAPH

$850.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: L15569

Measuring 22.75 by 24.5 inches overall, this is a nicely presented, framed display, the centerpiece of which is the signed photograph at top left showing McArthur placing a wreath at the flagpole of the National Memorial Cemetery in Honolulu on April 16, 1951. President Truman had just relieved him of duty as Supreme Commander of the United Nations forces in the Far East during the Korean War and the ceremony at the cemetery took place on his flight back to the United States.

The image is signed by McArthur in ink at lower right-center and framed beside a portrait bust view of him on the right. At bottom center is mounted a gold-on-black display panel that gives a summary of McArthur’s service and notes that the ceremony in Hawaii was the first of many popular receptions as he toured the United States.

McArthur (1880-1964,) came from a military family. His father was Lieutenant Colonel of the 24th Wisconsin in the Civil War, stayed in the postwar army and reached the rank of Major General in 1901. The younger McArthur served in the Mexican border campaign and in World War One, became the army chief-of-staff and in the 1930s took a leave of absence to oversee the creation of a Philippine army. Recalled to active duty, he rose to Allied Forces Supreme Commander in the Southwest Pacific, retook the Philippines and oversaw the eventual defeat of Japan. They are the only father and son to be awarded Congressional Medals of Honor. This is a professionally framed and matted display and memorial for one of America’s most well-known generals.  [sr]
