Folded, blue lined, white sheet of paper with a printed header of “HEADQUARTERS ARMY OF THE UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON.

Letter is dated March 22, 1873 and is entirely written and signed by Sherman. The letter deals with a woman’s request for promotion for a lieutenant in the 1st US Artillery. General Sherman states that such promotions are in the hands of the Secretary of War. Sherman ends the letter “ALWAYS SYMPATHETIC WITH THOSE WHO MADE SCARIFICES IN WAR, AND ESPECIALLY WITH THE OFFICERS WHO DID THE FIGHTING.” Letter is signed W. T. SHERMAN, GENERAL.

Paper is four pages but only the front and back of the first page is used. Paper has two horizontal fold lines. On the last blank page the folds are beginning to separate.
