Dated New York, July 2, 1882, the Bank of the Metropolis check is numbered 511 and made out to E. P. Field in the amount of $21.00 and is signed “D Sickles”. Pre-printed and ink, all in Sickles hand.

Check measures 8” x 2 ½”, and is in very fine condition with just some light yellowing/soiling around the edges.  Housed in a small plastic sleeve and affixed to a 12” x 16” piece of salmon colored cardboard; also affixed to the cardboard is a modern print of a brief description of Sickles’ military career.  Both are easily removable from the cardboard.

The Bank of the Metropolis was a bank in New York City that operated between 1871 and 1918. The bank was originally located at several addresses around Union Square in Manhattan before finally moving to 31 Union Square West.  Starting in the 1870s, the area surrounding Union Square Park became populated with hotels, theaters, and commercial enterprises. The Bank of the Metropolis was established on June 1, 1871, to serve the merchants around Union Square. The bank was merged into the Bank of Manhattan in 1918. [ld][ph:L]
