This British military accoutrement is an original angular socket bayonet used with their Brown Bess smoothbore musket. The triangular blade exhibits a spear shape and the two “bottom” sides are fluted to within 2” of the collar. The top, flat portion bears a stamp: a British crown over “6” proof mark. Socket is atypical without the reinforced collar, and this pattern had no locking ring. Bayonet bears a nice “tarnished-silver” color and is covered overall with speckles of moderate surface pitting. Blade is straight with clean edges and point. This specimen is 19 ¾” long overall, with a 16 ½” long blade, and a 2 ½” long socket.
A fine, Revolutionary War-era British Brown Bess bayonet. [jet]
