This bayonet for the Model 1891 Mosin-Nagant rifle bears the exploding bomb stamp of the U.S. Ordnance Department on one side of the neck at the base of the blade, marking it as belonging with one of the rifles retained by the U.S. government after the Russian default on their U.S. arms contracts with Remington and Westinghouse in World War One. Some 1.6 million were made by these U.S. companies from 1915 to 1917, but only about a quarter of these had been delivered by the time of the Russian Revolution and the new government defaulted on the rest. The U.S. government bought many of these to keep the companies afloat, supplied some to friendly armed forces and ended up keeping about 200,000, which it used for training and issued to the National Guard and other groups. The ordnance bomb stamp shows that this was one of those weapons. The bayonet has better than 95 percent coverage of its original deep bluing. Given its purchase by the U.S. government it qualifies as a U.S. secondary martial arm. [SR]
