Faced with a sudden increased demand for weapons at the beginning of the war, Germany responded with a huge variety of “ersatz” or replacement bayonets made by local manufacturers that would do the job until production of regulation patterns could catch up. This one is typical of the general type with a good steel blade, but simple pressed steel grip, flattened pommel, and a guard with two muzzle ears rather than a ring. It was hoped to make these able to fit both the M98 Mauser and the earlier M1888 Commission Rifle.
This blade has a good point and edges. The metal is smooth and bright in color mixed with gray spots and showing the deep original blue at the ricasso and on the guard. The grip has a clean-out hole, and the locking mechanism is good. The grips have an olive green paint that shows some chipping and minor flaking. The blade measures 12.5 inches in length. [SR]
